MAREMMA SHEEPDOGS
The origins of the maremma sheepdog come from the mists of time, that's why the best descriptions of this magnificent breed can be found in the ancient works of Latin autors.
In the 1st century before Christ, Varrone describes
the ancient Maremma Sheepdog in his
work "Rerum Rusticarum": "dog of large size, dark brown or
grey-yellowish eyes, lips and nose are dark, upper lip must cover teeth,
but not to be too abundant, big head, hanging ears, strong shoulder,
long straight legs, close between each other instead of
open wide, slim flanks, top line is levelled, white coat and leonine
appearance.
According to Columella, a later Latin author, "the shepherd
prefers a dog with white coat, because he can distinguish the dog from
the wild animal. It has to be robust, vigorous and fast, because
his duty is to fight wolves."
It is surprising to discover that the innate instinct of our Maremma
Sheepdog is telling us about an extraordinary story from thousands years
ago. In our beautiful white dog are
living both a great historical heritage and an unconditional
love for the members of our family and our home, that he demonstrates with no excesses and
with his proud and well-balanced temperament.
Who knows this wonderful breed, can't think of
his home without the reassuring presence of a Maremma Sheepdog.
