SHETLAND SHEEPDOGS
A small shepherd dog, of great beauty, whose nature
is still of a working dog, for his intelligence, self determination,
agility and strenght.
It comes from the Shetland Islands, an inhospitable wind swept land,
laying off the
North coast of Scotland, with very little natural resources.
Today's shetland sheepdog is the result of the natural evolution of
the dogs the Norse people
left on the islands more than one thousand years ago, with the later
introduction of a Scottish shepherd dog that arrived on the islands
with the flocks of sheep. On the Shetlands, natural environment
has brought all animals, not only dogs, but also sheep, cows and ponies,
to have a small size.
In the ancient local language, ther's an evocative name: "peerie
dog", from"peerie" meaning "fairy",
a truly appropriate name for a little dog, that makes happy every
day's life of his fortunate owner.
